Gillum: DeSantis’ Monkey Comment Says It All

On Sunday night for the first debate in Florida’s race  Ron DeSantis And Andrew Gillum, a fiery encounter that included vigorous exchanges on health care, gun control, immigration and crime. Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum took the stage in Tampa, Fla.,

“I’m on a mission to protect Florida’s future for a generation,” Mr. DeSantis began, before immediately pivoting to go on the offensive against Mr. Gillum, as he would throughout the debate. “Andrew is a failed mayor. He’s presided over a crime-ridden city. He’s involved in corruption. He’s not the guy to lead our state.”

The debate came at a crucial moment in the campaign: 16 days from the Nov. 6 election, and the night before early voting sites open in some of the state’s biggest counties. Most polls suggest the race is effectively tied, as is typical in Florida, the nation’s largest presidential swing state.

Donald Trump is weak, and he performs as all weak people do:

They become bullies. And Mr DeSantis is his acolyte,” Mr Gillum said. “He’s trying to be the Trump apprentice at every turn.

“I don’t actually read ‘The Art of the Deal’ to my son,” said Mr DeSantis, who ran a television ad showing that during the primary. “That’s not necessarily his cup of tea.”

Mr Gillum managed to keep attention on health care, an issue Democrats see as crucial this year and suggested that the fact he is African-American had something to do with DeSantis’s attacks.
